Khawaja Asif Rejects Trump’s Offer, Pakistan Won’t Join Abraham Accords
A fresh political debate has emerged in West Asia after former US President Donald Trump urged several Muslim-majority nations to normalize relations with Israel by joining the Abraham Accords. However, Pakistan has firmly rejected the proposal, with Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stating that Islamabad will not become part of the agreement under any circumstances. During a virtual meeting with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan, Trump reportedly encouraged these nations to improve diplomatic ties with Israel. He argued that expanding the Abraham Accords could open a new chapter of peace, trade, and economic cooperation across the region. According to Trump, countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have already benefited economically and diplomatically after normalizing relations with Israel. Trump described the Abraham Accords as one of the most significant peace initiatives in modern history. He claimed that broader participation from Muslim countries could bring long-term stability and economic strength to West Asia. Trump even said that such cooperation could create “lasting peace and prosperity” in the region for the first time in thousands of years. Despite these claims, Pakistan strongly opposed the idea. Responding to Trump’s remarks, Khawaja Asif made it clear that Pakistan’s stance on Israel remains unchanged. He stated that Pakistan cannot support any agreement that goes against its ideological principles and long-standing policies. Asif questioned the trustworthiness of Israel and emphasized that Pakistan does not recognize diplomatic relations with the country. The Pakistani minister also pointed out that Pakistani passports still carry a restriction stating they are not valid for travel to Israel. This, according to him, reflects Pakistan’s consistent policy regarding the issue. Reports from US media suggested that the atmosphere during the virtual meeting became tense after Trump raised the proposal. There was reportedly a brief silence from several participating leaders, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Pakistan. The silence became so noticeable that Trump jokingly asked whether everyone was still connected to the call. Pakistan’s rejection highlights the continuing divisions within the Muslim world over relations with Israel. While some Arab nations have embraced normalization agreements under the Abraham Accords, others continue to oppose such moves due to political, ideological, and regional concerns.
