CM Rekha Gupta Announces Eco-Friendly Plan for Damaged Religious Idols
The Delhi government has announced a new initiative to ensure the respectful disposal and recycling of broken or old idols of gods and goddesses worshipped in homes across the capital. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared the details of the campaign through a video message on social media, explaining that the move aims to protect religious sentiments while also addressing environmental concerns. According to the Chief Minister, many families face emotional and practical difficulties when idols become damaged, old, or unsuitable for regular worship. In many cases, such idols are left near peepal trees, riverbanks, parks, or roadsides, which can hurt religious sentiments and create sanitation problems. To solve this issue, the Delhi government plans to establish dedicated collection centers across the city where citizens can respectfully deposit broken or unused idols. The collected idols will then be recycled using environmentally friendly and scientific methods. The government believes this system will not only maintain the dignity and respect associated with religious symbols but also help reduce environmental damage caused by improper disposal practices. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the campaign is not just a government program but a public participation movement. The administration is currently preparing a detailed action plan and is seeking suggestions from citizens to make the initiative more effective. The government has asked residents to share their opinions on key aspects, including the overall idea of the campaign, suitable locations for collection centers such as wards, markets, or residential colonies, and additional ways to improve the process. The Chief Minister appealed to the public to actively support the initiative by providing suggestions through social media comments. She stated that when a good idea receives public support, it can become a large social movement. According to her, both respecting faith and maintaining cleanliness in Delhi are important responsibilities of the government. The Delhi government is expected to finalize a “foolproof” plan after reviewing public feedback. The initiative is being seen as an effort to combine cultural respect, civic responsibility, and environmental protection under one organized system.
