Vijay Government Faces Fresh Crisis After CPI-M Withdrawal Threat
Political tensions in Tamil Nadu have intensified after the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), openly warned Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay that it may withdraw support from his government. The warning has triggered fresh uncertainty around the stability of the ruling Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The controversy began after reports suggested that the TVK government could seek support from the AIADMK or even include leaders from the party in the government. Reacting strongly to these developments, senior CPI(M) leader Shanmugam said the Left party would reconsider its support if the AIADMK becomes part of the ruling arrangement. The CPI(M), along with smaller parties like the VCK, had extended outside support to TVK after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. According to Shanmugam, the people of Tamil Nadu voted for a fresh political alternative and rejected both the DMK and AIADMK. He reminded Vijay of his campaign promises, especially his pledge to provide clean and corruption-free governance. Shanmugam stated that bringing the AIADMK into the government would amount to betraying the public mandate. He argued that voters had chosen TVK expecting a new style of administration, free from old political alliances and corruption allegations. While expressing hope that Vijay would not take such a step, he made it clear that the CPI(M) would not hesitate to withdraw support if the government moved closer to the AIADMK. The political situation has become more sensitive because the TVK government does not hold a full majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. In the recent elections, TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, while the DMK won 59 seats and the AIADMK secured 47 seats. A party or alliance needs 118 seats to form the government. TVK managed to come to power with support from smaller parties such as the Congress, PMK, CPI(M), and VCK. Additionally, a group of AIADMK MLAs reportedly extended support to Vijay after internal divisions within their party. Since the government’s formation, disagreements among supporting parties have repeatedly created political pressure. Earlier, the VCK had also threatened to withdraw support over separate issues. Now, the CPI(M)’s warning has added another layer of instability. All eyes are now on Chief Minister Vijay and whether he will maintain his alliance with supporting parties or seek political stability through new partnerships. The coming days could play a crucial role in deciding the future of the Tamil Nadu government.
