Voting is currently underway in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal, with polling beginning at 7:00 AM and scheduled to continue until 6:00 PM. The election is being closely watched due to heightened security arrangements and a sudden political twist involving the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The Election Commission of India has set up a total of 285 polling stations across the constituency. More than 2.36 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in this election, including approximately 1.15 lakh women voters. From the early hours of voting, polling stations have reported long queues of voters, indicating strong public participation.
Security has been significantly intensified this time. Each polling booth is now guarded by double the usual number of personnel. Earlier, around four security personnel were deployed per booth, but this time the number has been increased to eight. In addition, nearly 35 companies of central armed forces have been deployed across the constituency to ensure peaceful voting. Around 30 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have also been stationed to handle any emergency situation swiftly.
The Falta Assembly seat, located in West Bengal, is widely considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). However, the political scenario took an unusual turn just 48 hours before voting when TMC candidate Jahangir Khan reportedly withdrew from the contest. Despite his withdrawal announcement, election officials clarified that since the nomination withdrawal deadline had already passed, he remains the official TMC candidate on the ballot. This means voters will still see his name representing the party, and no replacement candidate can be fielded.
The contest is now effectively seen as a multi-cornered fight, primarily between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Debangshu Panda and Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla. Other candidates in the race include CPI(M) nominee Shambhunath Kurmi, along with independents Dip Hati and Chandrakant Rai.
Election officials have also conducted mock polling at several booths before the start of voting to ensure machines and procedures are functioning properly. Overall, authorities have emphasized that all 285 polling stations are operating under strict security and monitoring arrangements.
The Election Commission of India has stated that the enhanced security measures, including additional central forces and rapid response teams, are aimed at ensuring free, fair, and peaceful voting throughout the day.
As voting continues, the Falta Assembly election is being seen as a closely watched political battle in West Bengal, not only because of the high voter turnout and security arrangements but also due to the unusual situation involving the officially listed TMC candidate and the last-minute political developments.
